Cool WiFi Radios

Posted on March 30, 2009 by admin

If you've ever wanted to listen to a radio station from your former place of residence, but it is too far away, maybe you need a WiFi Radio. These radios will pick up radio station audio streams anywhere on the internet as long as you have a working WiFi connection available. Most also have wired ethernet connections as well.

 CC WiFi Radio

This radio is from C.Crane. They are the Radio experts. If you need a specialized radio or, even more importantly, antenna, this is your source. From their website:

The CC WiFi gives you an American style of Internet Radio. The CC WiFi combines straightforward style with all the convenience of tuning in over 11,000 radio stations from around the world. The CC WiFi radio has excellent audio in a small footprint that fits nicely on a desktop, kitchen counter or bedside table.

Currently priced at $199.95, it's a great way to listen to the radio.

The Soundbridge by Roku is an amazingly simple device. Plug it in and go. If your favorite radio station isn't available, you can go into the built-in web interface and add it, or go to their online database and set it up so that everyone can listen.

$199.99

All internet radios require that the stations you listen to be in their online database, which your unit can ask for an address, or they require you to know how to find the address of the stream. This can be easier said than done as many stations don't really want you accessing their streams directly. They would rather you come through their website so they can count the visit. How to find hidden stream addresses is the subject of a future blog entry.

If you try one of these or several other internet radios that are on the market today, let us know how you like them. These things are pretty cool!

Emergency Email

Posted on March 29, 2009 by admin

The Emergency Email & Wireless Network is a free public service that will help you by making sure you have all the latest emergency information delivered right to your email or phone. Breaking weather or homeland security information will be sent to you as soon as it happens. If you're like me, and want to be sure that you wake up in the event of, say, a tornado warning, this service is for you. I don't want to wait until the tornado is close enough for me to hear it to wake up my family and take cover. I want a little warning. I have the alerts sent by emergencyemail.org set to go to my Blackberry and they make a sound I can't sleep through. I will know when we are under a tornado warning and will take care of my wife and kids.

If you're into expensive but Really Cool Toys, here is your source for everything from mini-remote-controlled helicopters, planes and balloons to hoverboards.

They even have some tiny wireless cameras you can attach to your flying R/C toys so you can get a birds-eye view!

I don't think I can afford anything from this site, but when I hit it big I will be visiting reallycooltoys.com on a regular basis. You can bet on it!

SETI@home

You can participate in the Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence. At Home. That's right, the SETI @ Home project is one of over two dozen distributed computing projects that you can participate in from home, office, laptop. You will be donating otherwise unused clock ticks from your computer to assist in analyzing data collected from various sources. The power of tens of thousands of PCs working on a project that might only have a few hours a week of university mainframe computing time available can make all the difference in the world when it comes to finding life elsewhere in the universe, or curing terminal diseases.

First Post

Posted on March 26, 2009 by admin

This is my first post to this new blog. I have owned thisdomain.com since 1996, when most people didn't even have a clue what a "domain" was. This is the first time I have ever used the domain for anything other than email.

When I give someone my email address, I often find that they think they don't understand me correctly and ask me to spell it. Instead, I usually say something like, "not THAT domain, THIS domain. Dot com." They always get it right after that.

I am an information junkie. I read a lot, and am a big user of Viigo on my Blackberry. I skim dozens of blogs and RSS news feeds every day. I find a lot of really cool stuff that I want to tell everyone about, but only have a few contacts that I would send emails like that to. So I hope to develop a following here so that I can share my COOL finds with lots of people.

There are plenty of blogs that report on cool stuff. Hopefully you will share my taste and opinions on what's really cool and what isn't, and you will become a regular reader. And hopefully you will tell your friends that think like you do.

That's my hope, anyway. Stay tuned for cool stuff on thisBlog.
